History

Lasting signs of Sussex’s history and heritage are to be found all over the county, with historic houses, glorious gardens, quaint and picturesque villages, fascinating castles and churches, steam railways and museums.

Arundel Castle Arundel CastleArundel Castle Arundel Castle - exceptional in that it is both an ancient castle dating from the Norman Conquest, and a stately home for the Dukes of Norfolk. The castle is still a family home containing some very fine furniture and paintings in a setting high on a hill overlooking the South Downs and the river Arun.

Chichester Cathedral is in the heart of the city and has been a centre of Christian worship for 900 years. Cathedral flower festival in June, restaurant and gift shop.

Parham House & GardenParham House and Garden, Pulborough - a stunning Elizabethan house with a fine collection of furniture and four acre walled garden, located in an ancient deer park on the South Downs.

Petworth House and Park - a fine National Trust art collection of 300 paintings.

Petworth House & Park This glorious mansion surrounded by magnificent parkland has ten rooms permanently open to the public, with a fascinating series of service rooms including Victorian kitchen.

There are lots more historic sites and attractions to be discovered within the county, all located within a short distance of many of the farms.
